The Story of the Teddy Bear
Teddy Bears. If you are reading this article you are probably interested in the history of the teddy bear or Theodore Roosevelt to some extent. Most people remember (after being reminded) that the teddy bear got its name from Theodore Roosevelt, but only a few people can tell the story. Well here it is from what I understand of the story.
Theodore Roosevelt was The United States 26th President. He was an outdoorsman and known for big game hunting. He was invited for a bear hunt by the governor of Mississippi and Teddy impatiently wanted to see a bear the first day. His Guide caught trail 2 days into the hunt, he had dogs on the bear trying to hold the bear till the president caught up. The guide ended up smashing the bear in the head and roping the bear to a tree. Teddy came upon the bear and refused to shoot the bear but asked that the bear be killed and put out of its misery.
A newspaper cartoonist heard of the event and decided to depict it in a hand drawn cartoon. There may be more that can be learned from the cartoon and the current events happening around that time in society. We do know that the story of Teddy and his uncanny sportsmanship became very popular at that time.
There was a Jewish imigrant couple who owned a penny store in Brooklyn New York who saw an opportunity. From what I understand they had already been sewing stuffed animals and decided to sew a bear together from velvet material and name it Teddy. They placed it on their penny store counter and multiple people wanted to buy the stuffed bear named Teddy. Before they began selling the "teddy bears" they sent the first teddy bear to Teddy himself in Washington D.C. asking him permission to name the bear after him. He obliged and since then Americans have called stuffed bears teddy
